Rueda de prensa de Courtois

Courtois: “We're hungry to win the Super Cup"

NEWS STORY. 15/01/2022

“We're hoping to deliver a good defensive display, keep a clean sheet and win the game", said the goalkeeper.

Thibaut Courtois spoke to the press following Real Madrid's final training session ahead of the Super Cup final. The Belgian noted: “It's another final. We have lots of players in this squad who are used to playing in finals and I hope that will help us to win the game. We're up against a team who were involved in three finals last year, but I believe our quality will see us through”.

“We know the coach will motivate us ahead of the game tomorrow. Everyone knows we're in a final, we want to win it and we don't need added motivation because we know we're playing for a trophy. We didn't win anything last year and we're hungry. It's a final and we don't care who we're up against. They deserve to be here and we're ready to play against anyone. They're a strong side and it'll be a tough clash. It's a great stadium, there's a good atmosphere and we hope we can make the madridistas here happy”.

“I don't think we're a counter-attacking side. We're a team that can do it all. When we need to keep the ball, we can. It depends on the opposition. We often play out from the back, I'm involved and we try to pass it out. Then there are games when we have to defend a bit more and if you've got guys up top like Vini Jr., Rodrygo and Benzema you can play on the counter. Every team plays to their strengths and we can attack when we need to and defend when it's asked of us as well”.

His defense
“I'm happy with whoever. Varane and Ramos are Real Madrid legends and they have won it all, they're unbelievable. They've moved on now and we know we have some great partnerships with Militão, Nacho and Alaba".

"We're still not conceding many goals and we're defending well, I feel comfortable playing with all of them, they show on the pitch how good they are and I hope we can deliver another good defensive display tomorrow to help us win the game".

“It's a softer light, it's not as clear as in Spain. You have to get used to it, it's different".

“He's still working hard and training well, it's the coach's decision and it's not easy. Vini Jr. is on the one side and on the other we have lots of options. He's shown he's a member of this squad and if he is called on to play tomorrow, he'll give 100% and help us to win”.
Vini Jr.
“He's a young guy, he's improving as he gets older and gains in confidence. All he needed was to start scoring goals and be a bit more free mentally, but he always scored in training too. He's got so much quality and he's really on it this year. He scored with his first chance against Barcelona the other day, and that's not an easy one to put away. He helps us out a lot and the team is delighted with how he's helping us to win games”.
Unai Simón
“I heard what he said and I'm pleased, because it's nice to hear from someone who knows what it is to play between the sticks. The club and the fans really value me. It may not be so significant, but for someone who knows how important it is to help the team out to say that is fantastic. He's a great goalkeeper, for the national team too. Tomorrow will pit the goalkeepers against each other as well and I hope we win it”.
“Set-pieces are a key part of football and you can score from a corner and go ahead. This year, we've altered where we are from free-kicks and we have to adjust, but we are doing a good job. We struggled in the game against Athletic at home but we did well in the next clash at the San Mamés. We have to be focused tomorrow and make sure we're strong on set-pieces, then I'm sure we won't concede”.
Playing against the same opposition on various occasions
“The only different thing is that you know the opposition because you've faced each other not long ago, but every game is different and tomorrow may well me different  to the previous clashes. The Copa clash against Elche will be different to the league game. We're focused for every game”.
Raúl García
“I've known him for a long time and I'm still in contact with him and his family. We speak every now and then, tomorrow I'll see him and I hope I can keep him out".
Special moment
“The biggest game for me in terms of change is Galatasaray away, when we won 0-1, when I made some big saves in the first half and then we went on a good run after that. Winning a cup with a good performance in the sticks and keeping a clean sheet in the shootout is big but it was a good season last year, without winning any titles. I hope I can keep it up this year, but with some more trophies. I'm working hard towards that, trying to improve. We're hoping to clinch the first title of the season tomorrow”.
