The more than 100 members of the Vicente del Bosque Fan Club in Athens, Greece experienced another magical evening when their President of Honour, none other than Vicente del Bosque, who was joined by Paco Jiménez, landed in the Greek capital to spend an evening with them.

At 10 pm on 22 May 2007, the fan club hosted a dinner at the Zafolia Hotel in Athens, during which fan club President Manuel Orfanos presented his dear friend Vicente Del Bosque with an olive crown made of gold in recognition of the coach’s successful career with Real Madrid.

Vicente Del Bosque in turn presented the fan club with a framed picture of himself talking to Santiago Bernabéu during a training session. Paco Jiménez completed the ceremony by handing Manuel Orfanos a replica of the goddess Cibele.

A video compiling the most important moments of Vicente Del Bosque’s stint as Real Madrid coach was then followed by footage of a 1981/82 match between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, which Del Bosque played in, and a 2002/03 Champions League match between Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Del Bosque the hosted a question and answer session before sitting down to sign hundreds of autographs and have pictures taken with the fan club members.

The Greeks were astonished by Del Bosque’s charisma and quickly realized why Real Madrid had been so successful with him at the helm.

“He is someone who commands respect,” says fan club President Manuel Orfanos, “Wherever he goes in Athens, Vicente creates a buzz. He was, without a doubt, the center of attention. Everyone on the street stopped him to shake his hand, to take a picture, or just to hear one word come out of the mouth of the legendary Real Madrid figure. The Champions League final may have been between Milan and Liverpool, but Vicente del Bosque’s personality won the match. Vicente is one of a kind.”
