One of the centre-backs who led us to La Octava

Playing position: Defender
Real Madrid appearances: 33

Julio César will go down in Real Madrid history as one of the members of the team who won the eighth European Cup in the year 2000. The Brazilian central defender arrived at our club at just 20 years of age, having made a name for himself in the Spanish league with Valladolid.

In his single season as a madridista, Toshack and Del Bosque often opted for a three-man back-line, playing him alongside historic figures such as Helguera, Hierro, Karanka, Iván Campo and Sanchís. He was quite often involved in the madridista defence during the European Cup campaign, making nine appearances, seven from the start.

Among those European games, is the second leg of the semi-final against Bayern Munich in Germany. Julio César played the full 90 minutes as the defence managed to hold on to the 2-0 result from the first leg to make the final in Paris, where they would go on to win La Octava against Valencia.
