Real Madrid emerged victorious from Berlin to claim their sixth victory in as many games in Group C of the Champions League. The Whites had to recover from Volland’s opening goal on the stroke of halftime but managed to turn the game on its head in the second half courtesy of two headed goals from Joselu. In the 85th minute, Kral, restored parity for the hosts, but Ceballos struck with a deflected from the edge of the area four minutes later to hand Ancelotti‘s side the three points. Real Madrid completed the group stage with a 100%-win record, the third time the club has done so after the achievements in 2011/12 and 2014/15. They will now discover their next opponents in the last 16 in Monday’s draw.

The game started at a frantic pace with the hosts carving out a promising chance with Behrens' volley in the six-yard box being parried away by Kepa in the first minute. Madrid soon got into the game and began to dominate possession and create chances of their own. The first came in the 10th minute when Lucas Vázquez played through Bellingham, who pulled clear of Diogo Leite with his first touch and looked to score past Rönnow in goal with his second, but the keeper was not to be beaten this time. Six minutes later, Fran García crossed for Joselu who pulled away from his marker to smack a header against the crossbar.

A goal down going into the break
Union Berlin kept things tight at the back as Ancelotti‘s men looked to catch out the Germans and find a way through. Valverde tried his luck from a freekick but his effort narrowly missed the target with 24 minutes on the clock and then Bellingham was again denied from the edge of the box. Joselu had the clearest chance on 43’ when his shot with the outside of the boot from inside the box, after a mistake from Gosens, shaved the woodwork. The closing minutes of the first half were not for the faint hearted. First, Lucas Vázquez played in a cross which struck Diego Leite on the hand and saw the visitors awarded a penalty. Modrić stepped up but his spot-kick was saved by Rönnow.  Then the hosts went forward and Volland got on the end of a long clearance by the keeper to score past Kepa

Real Madrid almost equalised five minutes into the second half when Lucas Vázquez's volley from the edge of the area was turned away by the diving goalkeeper. Five minutes later, the shot-stopper again produced another fine reflex save to keep out Rodrygo's header from inside the six-yard box. The Whites piled forward and the got their reward on 61’. Rodrygo beat his man going down the right and chipped in a looping cross for Joselu to head in. Madrid almost grabbed the lead four minutes later when Alaba’s acrobatic effort kissed the post.

Frantic final stages
This was the best spell for Ancelotti‘s men and they were soon in the lead. Joselu got on the end of Fran García's cross at the near post to nod the ball beyond Union keeper Frederik Rønnow and seal his first brace as a madridista. With 85 minutes on the clock, the hosts drew level through Kral, whose fierce long-range strike found its way in. However, there was still time for Madrid to make it six wins out of six in the group stage and a deflected effort from Ceballos from the edge of the box secured the victory. Madrid will discover their last-16 opponents in Monday’s draw.
