106 years since club's 5th Copa de España triumph
On 15 May 1917, Real Madrid defeated Arenas in the final (2-1).
Today marks the 106th anniversary of Real Madrid's fifth Copa de España crown. The Whites faced Arenas in the final, which was decided after a replay. The first was played on 13 May in Barcelona and both teams failed to score after normal time and extra time with two 10-minute halves. The 0-0 draw forced a replay, which took place two days later at the same venue.
The decisive match was once again very close and dramatic in its length. The Basque side took the lead in the first half, but Madrid equalised courtesy of a goal by René Petit. With the score 1-1 at the final whistle, the game went into extra time of 20 minutes, which also failed to produce a winner. At the start of the second extra time, Álvarez netted the winning goal for the madridistas, who held on until the 130th minute. This victory meant that our club lifted the Copa again after its previous title in 1908.
