We won our third Intercontinental Basketball Cup 45 years ago
Real Madrid won the decisive victory on 24 June 1978 against Obras Sanitarias of Argentina (103-104).
It was on 24 June 1978 that Real Madrid won their third Intercontinental Basketball Cup. That edition was played in Buenos Aires Argentina and the madridistas competed against Sirio of Brazil, Pallacanestro Varese of Italy, the University of Rhode Island of the United States and Obras Sanitarias of Argentina. Our team and the hosts won their first three games, so the winner was decided on the last day with a showdown between them.
Coughran, with 26 points, Brabender 25 and Szczerbiak 24 were the most outstanding Madrid players in the victory over Obras Sanitarias, but it was a basket by Prada with two seconds left that made the score 103-104. This triumph added lustre to a 1978 which also saw us lift the European Cup a few months earlier. It was also the third consecutive edition of the Intercontinental Cup won by Real Madrid.
