The Whites won the championship on the 36th matchday, two before the end of the season.
Real Madrid finished the 1988/89 season, the fourth of the five consecutive league championships to be won by the Quinta del Buitre, five points ahead of Barcelona. Individually, Hugo Sánchez 27 goals was the team's top scorer in the competition. That squad was coached by Leo Beenhakker and we also won the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup that season.
