Today marks 68 years since the first ever European Cup game at the Bernabéu
On this day 68 years ago, the Santiago Bernabéu hosted its first ever game in the European Cup. Real Madrid welcomed Swiss side Servette, recording their first impressive display in the tournament in front of their own fans. The team led by José Villalonga won 5-0 to complete the tie in stunning fashion on what was their European Cup debut.
The first European Cup goal at the Bernabéu came from the boots of Alfredo Di Stéfano. The Arrow struck a brace in the game, while Joseíto, Rial and Molowny were also on the scoresheet. One month earlier, on the 8th of September 1955, Real Madrid had played their first ever European Cup clash in Geneva, winning 0-2.
Madridista dominance
Victories in the first five European Cups was largely down to the madridista success at home. Our team were unbeaten on their ground until February 1962, a run that included the unforgettable moment when the second European Cup was lifted at the Santiago Bernabéu after a win over Fiorentina.
