Today marks 59 years since Pirri's debut
On 8 November 1964, he got underway with a win for Real Madrid over Barcelona (4-1).
On this day 59 years ago, a player who embodies the madridista spirit and character like few others made his Real Madrid debut: José Martínez Sánchez, Pirri. The man who would go on to become a club legend made his first appearance for the team in a win over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu 4-1.
Born in Ceuta on 11 March 1945, Pirri was a truly versatile footballer. He played both as a defender and in midfield, and on occasions when called upon, he even deputised ably as a striker. He arrived at Real Madrid at 19 years of age from Granada and following 16 seasons, 561 appearances and 172, he had left an indelible legacy. He was a member of the yeyé side that lifted the sixth European Cup, and also won 10 LaLiga titles and 4 Copas de España.
Legacy
An example of commitment on the pitch, he was the first player ever to receive one of the highest honours our club can bestow: the Laureada. After his retirement, he completed his studies in Medicine and returned to Real Madrid to join the medical team. He was later technical director and general sporting director. In tribute to his remarkable career, the Real Madrid Board of Directors have proposed he should be named honorary president of our club at the upcoming Extraordinary General Assembly of Representative Members on Saturday 11 November.
