Today marks the 76th anniversary of the inauguration of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. On 14 December 1947, Real Madrid opened this sanctuary of sport with a friendly against Portuguese side Os Belenenses. The Whites won 3-1 and Barinaga had the honour of being the stadium's first goal scorer.

We have seen the pride it brings to all madridistas and we are now nearing the fulfilment of a dream that will mark our destiny. This project, one of the most important in Europe, is also a symbol of our unity and our strength.”
The stadium has been named Santiago Bernabéu since 1955, in homage to the club's legendary president. The aim now is to turn it into an avant-garde landmark, with the utmost comfort, safety and state-of-the-art technology, and where fans will continue to enjoy unique experiences. Some of these historic moments concern the most important football events that our stadium has hosted, such as the four European Cup finals, the 1982 World Cup final, the 1964 European Championship final and the 2018 Copa Libertadores final.
