This was the third edition to be played in a knockout format and the second outside Spain. In the final, the Madridistas faced Athletic Club, who they defeated 2-0 with goals from Modrić and Benzema. The Croatian midfielder was voted MVP of the final.
Previously, the team coached by Carlo Ancelotti had defeated Barcelona in the semi-finals. The match had to be settled in extra time, which ended 2-2 after goals from Vini Jr. and Benzema. The goal that sent the Whites through to the final was struck by Valverde in the 98th minute.
