On 13 June 1956, Real Madrid inaugurated their European Cup trophy cabinet after a landmark match against Stade de Reims. The Parc des Princes in Paris witnessed a thrilling final, with the French side going 0-2 ahead early on. Di Stéfano and Rial restored parity before the break, but in the 62nd minute, Hidalgo struck again for Stade de Reims. The Whites then launched their European legacy with a late comeback thanks to goals from Marquitos and Rial, who bagged a brace.

In this first edition, Real Madrid made their first appearance in the European Cup against Servette on 8 September 1955 in Geneva. Miguel Muñoz netted Madrid's first goal of the tournament in that 2-0 win. Their opponents in the subsequent rounds were Partizan and Milan.

68 years after that final, Real Madrid have become the most successful club in the history of the European Cup with 15 trophies. The Whites have also participated in the most competitions (54), won the most (294) and scored the most goals (1,075).
