Today marks the 48th anniversary of Real Madrid's second Intercontinental Cup in basketball. On 7 October 1977, the team mathematically secured the trophy by defeating Varese in the fourth game of a round-robin tournament held in the Spanish capital. The Whites retained the title, the second of three consecutive victories between 1976 and 1978.
Real Madrid were back in the Intercontinental Cup a year after winning the previous edition in Buenos Aires. Under the guidance of Lolo Sainz once again, the Madridistas finished the competition undefeated, beating Francana of Brazil (94-113); Maccabi Elite (105-97); Dragones de Tijuana (105-129); Mobilgirgi Varese, in what would be the decisive match (115-94); and Providence Friars (103-90).
