On 11 June 1989, Real Madrid clinched the title at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Today marks the 35th anniversary of Real Madrid's 24th league title. On 11 June 1989 the Whites secured the championship mathematically after defeating Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium (3-0) courtesy of goals from Butragueño, Hugo Sánchez and Gordillo. Madrid clinched the title on matchday 36, two games before the end of the season.
Real Madrid ended the 1988/89 league campaign, which was the fourth of five in a row that would be won by the Quinta del Buitre, five points ahead of Barcelona. On an individual level, Hugo Sánchez (27 goals) was the team's top scorer in the competition. The squad was coached by Leo Beenhakker, and during the season they also lifted the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
