Modrić, Carvajal and the basketball team scoop prizes at the As Sports Awards 2023
The Croatian ace won the Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey this year; Carvajal was part of the Spanish national side that won the Nations League and Chus Mateo's team lifted an eleventh European Cup in epic fashion.
Luka Modrić, Dani Carvajal and Real Madrid's basketball team took centre stage at the As Sports Awards 2023, held at Madrid's Teatro Real. The Croatian star was the winner of the As Sports Award, following an outstanding 2023 that saw him lift two new trophies with our club: the Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey. At 38 years of age, Modrić remains one of the greatest midfielders in the world and continues to add to his legendary status at Real Madrid, where he recently made his 500th appearance.
The basketball team picked up an award in the same category and Felipe Reyes was tasked with collecting the trophy. 2023 has been an unforgettable year for madridismo, thanks to the EuroLeague final victory in Kaunas. Chus Mateo's team got their hands on an eleventh European Cup in the club's history following a heroic fightback that culminated in Llull's winning basket against Olympiacos with three seconds left on the clock. The team also clinched the Spanish Super Cup in 2023, their sixth in a row.
National Teams
Dani Carvajal was also involved in the ceremony as a member of the Men's Spanish National Team who became Nations League champions and he took the stage to collect the award. Alongside the full-back, other national stars including Joselu, Fran García, Nacho and Kepa were key to the success. Finally, the women's National Team were recognised for their World Cup triumph. Eight members of our team were crowned world champions, a historic feat : Athenea del Castillo, Claudia Zornoza, Rocío Gálvez, Oihane Hernández, Ivana Andrés, Misa Rodríguez, Teresa Abelleira and Olga Carmona.
