Institutional statement on Amancio Amaro by the club president
Today is a hugely sad day for all madridistas and for the whole world of football.
I would like to convey first of all, on behalf of Real Madrid and personally, our deepest condolences for the passing of our beloved honorary president, Amancio Amaro. All our love and all our support goes to his wife Consuelo; to his 6 children; to his brother Juan Carlos; to his 12 grandchildren and the rest of his family and loved ones.
Amancio is one of the biggest Real Madrid legends. He is one of the best players in our history and one of the best wingers in the football world. Above all, he has been an example for the values that our club stands for.
He joined Real Madrid in the summer of 1962, from Deportivo de La Coruña, aged just 22. He defended our badge and our jersey for 14 seasons.
Every madridista and every fan of this sport will fondly remember his great achievements at Real Madrid, winning 9 Spanish League titles and 3 Spanish Cups. And especially our historic sixth European Cup at the Heysel stadium in Brussels in front of thousands of Spanish emigrants from all over Europe who watched that unforgettable final.
Also unforgettable was one of the most important moments in our football. Winning the 64 European Championship with the Spanish national team, at our Santiago Bernabéu stadium against the then Soviet Union.
Capped 42 times and on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Brazil's first World Cup win in 1968, he was a member of the FIFA select team at the Maracana stadium, where he played against the legendary Brazilian team led by Pele.
We also fondly remember his time as coach of Castilla, with whom he won the Second Division championship in 1984. Moreover, he was the man who discovered the famous Quinta del Buitre.
A much-loved figure by Madrid fans, as well as by everyone who loves football around the world. Amancio has been a symbol of respect, companionship, talent, hard work and humility. We are all very proud of what he represents for our club.
I have been fortunate to maintain a great friendship with him and I'm sure that his memory will remain eternal for all of us who knew him. He wore Real Madrid in his heart and I know that being named honorary president of our club was for him a very special moment that filled him with pride and happiness.
Thank you, my dear Amancio, for everything you did to make our club greater. You will forever be in the hearts of every madridista.
