On 12 December 1990, Real Madrid clinched their third Spanish Super Cup. Their opponents were Barcelona, and they took the first step towards the title in the first leg, played a week earlier at the Camp Nou. The Whites secured victory at Barça's stadium courtesy of a goal from Míchel (0-1).

The return leg was played at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Alfredo Di Stéfano's team dazzled their fans and sealed the Super Cup with a resounding 4-1 victory. Butragueño scored twice, while Hugo Sánchez and Aragón also got on the scoresheet, with the latter scoring a superb goal from the centre of the pitch to round off the rout.
