The Bernabéu turns 77
It was on 14 December 1947 that it was officially opened and, as our president said at the most recent Annual General Meeting, it is "in the final phase of fulfilling the great challenge that Real Madrid set itself five years ago: to make the Bernabéu a universal avant-garde icon and an architectural emblem of Madrid."
Today marks the 77th anniversary of the inauguration of the Santiago Bernabéu. It was on 14 December 1947 that Real Madrid opened its temple of sport with a friendly against Portuguese side Os Belenenses. The Whites won 3-1 and Barinaga had the honour of being the first player to score at the stadium.
Since then, the Santiago Bernabéu has been the stage for Real Madrid's numerous achievements. Our club's history is full of magical nights that have delighted the fans, such as those experienced in Champions League ties against teams like PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the Decimocuarta and Decimoquinta. Unforgettable moments that will continue to take place in a stadium that has become a space with maximum comfort, security and state-of-the-art technology, and where fans continue to experience unique experiences.
ALL THE LATEST EVENTS FROM THE SANTIAGO BERNABÉU IN THE 21ST CENTURY
The stadium was named after Santiago Bernabéu in 1955, in homage to the club's legendary president. With the remodelling almost complete, our stadium has added to its legacy by hosting new unforgettable experiences that will remain engraved in the club's history. It has also hosted some of the most important events in football, such as four European Cup finals, the World Cup final (1982), the European Championship final (1964) and the Copa Libertadores final (2018).
As Club President Florentino Pérez explained at the most recent Annual General Meeting: "We're in the final phase of fulfilling the great challenge that Real Madrid set itself five years ago, which was to make the Bernabéu a universal avant-garde icon and an architectural emblem of Madrid. It is the most iconic stadium in world football."
