On 13 June 1951, the Real Madrid basketball team clinched the Copa de España for the very first time. The final took place in San Sebastian against Barcelona. The Whites were in control of the first half and at the interval they were ahead by more than ten points. They were able to maintain this lead for the rest of the game and lifted the trophy with a final score of 47-36. The top scorer in the final was Galíndez, with 20 points.
 
On the road to the crunch match, Real Madrid had knocked out Cultural Covadonga in the quarter-finals and Liceo Francés in the semi-finals. 71 years on from this first cup triumph, the madridistas hold a record 28 trophies in the competition.
