Today marks the 51st anniversary of Real Madrid's 15th league title. On 14 May 1972, the Whites claimed the title after defeating Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu 4-1 on the final day of the season. Amancio and Santillana netted in the first half and Pirri grabbed a brace in the second half to secure a 4-1 win over Sevilla.
That league campaign, which consisted of 18 teams, saw Real Madrid finish in first place on 47 points, followed by Valencia 45 and Barcelona 43. Pirri 11 and Santillana 10 were the team's top scorers. The Madrid side was coached by Miguel Muñoz, who clinched his ninth and last league title as manager.
