47 years since the comeback agaisnt Deby County
We won 5-1 in a legendary match for the club.
On 5th November 1975 one of the most memorable matches of Real Madrid’s history took place. On that day, our team was playing against Derby County in the second leg of the round of 16 of the European Cup and had the tough task of coming back from the 4-1 advantage that the English champions brought with them. We had never turned around a 3 goal deficit in Europe.
In search of something epic, the fans at the Santiago Bernabéu waited for their side with baited breath, who opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Roberto Martínez got on the end of a ball flicked on by Santillana to start the come-back. Despite numerous white chances, the 2nd goal wouldn’t come until the start of the second half. It was Roberto Martinez once again who latched onto a clearance from the English keeper.
Night of Magic
A few minutes later, the come-back dream was fulfilled when Santillana headed a Netzer free kick into the back of the net. However, a 62nd minute shot from George from outside the area would see Real Madrid out of Europe again. It was time to show that this club never gives up and the prize came in the last 10 minutes through Pirri from the penalty spot after Amancio was brought down. The 4-1 took the tie into extra time where the whites completed a legendary night with screamer from Santillana. The Cantabrian lifted the ball over a defender’s head and guided the ball home with his left to put the icing on the cake of one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the club.
