Today marks the 45th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest goalkeeping legends of Real Madrid and world football. Ricardo Zamora was the star of of the Whites' team between 1930 and 1936 and his performances were instrumental in the club winning its first two league titles 1931/32 and 1932/33. On both occasions, he was the goalkeeper who conceded the fewest goals in the competition, a distinction that would later be renamed the Zamora Trophy in his honour.

With Madrid he also lifted two Copa de España trophies: in 1934 against Valencia at Montjuïc and in 1936 against Barcelona at Mestalla. That Clásico match with the title at stake was Zamora's last official appearance for Madrid, and he finished with a memorable performance to collect the trophy. His achievements as a Madrid player are rounded off with 1 Regional Championship and 5 Mancomunado Trophies. He was capped 46 times by Spain and was part of the Spanish national team's first successful campaign, winning the silver medal at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp. At the time of his death, Zamora was 77 years old.
