The first team thrashed the academy side with goals from Juanito 2, SantillanaSabidoDel Bosque and García Hernández to secure the double, having previously clinched the LaLiga title.

Vujadin Boskov's Real Madrid eliminated Logroñés last 16, Betis quarter-finals and Atlético Madrid semi-finals en route to the final. Meanwhile, Castilla faced Athletic, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón on their way, and their achievement in the tournament was rewarded with qualification for the following season's Cup Winners' Cup.
