On 4 June 1980, Real Madrid secured their fourteenth Copa de España trophy. The Santiago Bernabéu hosted the biggest madridista final in the competition’s history, since the Whites’ opponents were Castilla. The first team won the match comfortably courtesy of goals by Juanito 2, SantillanaSabidoDel Bosque and García Hernández to seal the double, having previously finished top of LaLiga.

On the road to the final, Real Madrid, under the guidance of Vujadin Boskov, had knocked out Logroñés last-16, Betis quarter-finals and Atlético Madrid semi-finals. Meanwhile, Castilla battled past Athletic, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón, and they were rewarded with a place in the following season’s Cup Winners Cup.
