It's 38 years today since Real Madrid's first European Basketball Cup Winners' Cup victory. Our team was crowned champions in the Belgian city of Ostend on 14 March 1984, overcoming Olimpia Milan 82-81. The hero of that final was Brian Jackson, who recorded 27 points and scored two decisive free throws.
The competition got underway with Real Madrid drawn in Group B alongside US Scavolini Victoria, Panathinaikos and Pardubice. They went on to qualify for the next round in first place with 5 wins and 1 loss. In the two-legged semi-final they beat KK Cibona before having to come back from 34-38 down at half-time in the final. With just eight seconds to go, the team coached by Lolo Sainz was down by one point. Chasing victory, Corbalán missed a shot, but Jackson grabbed the offensive rebound and forced a personal foul.
