Today marks the 36th anniversary of Real Madrid's 22nd LaLiga title. On 14 June 1987, the Whites mathematically clinched the title after beating Zaragoza at La Romareda 1-3 on the penultimate matchday. The madridistas triumphed courtesy of a Butragueño brace and a goal from Solana.
 
The 1986/87 competition followed a different format, as it was based on a final playoff system. After finishing top in the first 34 matchdays, Real Madrid led the top six teams, who faced each other again to decide the champions. At the end of the longest ever league campaign 44 games, Real Madrid collected the highest points tally 66 ahead of Barcelona 63.
 
Hugo Sánchez finishes as pichichi
Real Madrid were the top league's top scorers with 84 goals and Hugo Sánchez claimed the competition's Pichichi Trophy 34 goals. Leo Beenhakker was in charge of that team, and in his first season in charge, he secured the first of his three league titles.
