Today marks 33 years since Real Madrid got their hands on a 24th LaLiga title. On 11 June 1989, they mathematically clinched the title when they beat Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabéu 3-0, thanks to goals for Butragueño, Hugo Sánchez and Gordillo. Our team won the league on matchday 36, two games before the end of the campaign.

Real Madrid finished the 1988/89 league season, the fourth of five consecutive victories with the Quinta del Buitre, with a 5-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table. On an individual level, Hugo Sánchez 27 goals was the team's top scorer in the competition. The squad was coached by Leo Beenhakker, and also won the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup that season.
