29 years without Petrovic
The Croatia and Real Madrid legend who won a FIBA Saporta Cup and the Copa del Rey with the Whites, passed away in a road traffic accident on 7 June 1993.
On 7 June 1993, Drazen Petrovic died in a road traffic accident in Germany. The madridista fans may only have enjoyed his game for the 1988/89 campaign, but his dazzling displays in that time carved him out a fond place in Real Madrid history. One such performance came in the FIBA Saporta Cup final, when he posted 62 points to help the team past Snaidero Caserta. He also lifted the Copa del Rey in the same season.
Petrovic was born in Sibenik Croatia on 22 October 1964 and was just 28 years of age at the time of the tragic accident, having already made his name as a legend of European basketball. He shot to fame at KK Sibenka and Cibona Zagreb before signing for Real Madrid. A blistering spell at our club saw him move to the NBA, where he played for the Portland Trail Blazers and the New Jersey Nets. The latter franchise retired his number 3 jersey following his death.
