Raimundo Saporta passed away in Madrid on 2 February 1997 at the age of 70. A key figure in Madrid's history, along with Santiago Bernabéu, he played a crucial role in the development of Real Madrid into the best club in the world. He was a member of our club between 1952 and 1991, where he became vice-president and president of the basketball department. His great contribution to the club also saw him named honorary president.

Along with his achievements in the construction of the Madrid legacy, Raimundo Saporta also contributed a great deal to other fields of Spanish sport, receiving numerous awards, such as the Gold Medal for Sporting Merit.

Basketball
He played a major role in this sport. Prior to joining Real Madrid, he was part of the Spanish Basketball Federation and had extensive involvement in the International Basketball Federation FIBA throughout his career. The former European Cup Winners' Cup was called the Saporta Cup in his honour, while the basketball pavilion in the former Sports City was named after him.
