25 years since the passing of Raimundo Saporta
A key character in the history of Real Madrid, he was named the club's honorary president.
Raimundo Saporta passed away in Madrid on 2 February 1997 at the age of 70. He is a key figure in the history of Real Madrid as, alongside Santiago Bernabéu, he was instrumental in the development of the club making it the best club in the world. He was a member of our club between 1952 and 1991, becoming vice-president and president of the basketball division. For his great contribution to the club, he was also named honorary president.
In addition to his achievements in the history of Real Madrid, Raimundo Saporta did important work in other fields of Spanish sport, receiving numerous awards, such as the Gold Medal for Sporting Merit.
Basketball
His role in this sport was enormous. Before joining Real Madrid, he was a part of the Spanish Basketball Federation and throughout his career he had an extensive career in the International Basketball Federation FIBA. In his honour, the old European Cup Winners' Cup was named the Saporta Cup, and the basketball pavilion at the old Sports City was named after him.
