Spain’s Secretary of State for Sport and the president of Spain’s High Council for Sport CSD, José Manuel Franco, visited one of the Real Madrid Foundation’s socio-sporting schools and the Salesian Congregation in Santo Domingo during the course of his official visit to the Dominican Republic.
Franco was joined by the Dominican Republic’s Vice-Minister of Sports, Franklin de la Mota, and the Spanish ambassador to the country, Antonio Pérez-Hernández y Torra, as well as representatives from the Spanish International Cooperation Agency, Mapfre-BHD, in representation of the Mapfre Foundation, which is financing the project, the Real Madrid Foundation and the Fundación Salesiana-Don Bosco.
Franco paid a visit to the Real Madrid Foundation’s socio-sporting school, located in the plaza Educativa Don Bosco, Hainamosa, Santo Domingo Este, where children and adolescents aged between six and 17 are given the opportunity to improve their social inclusion and holistic education through football and basketball activities. The visit was organised in conjunction with the Spanish Embassy and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
Socio-sporting projects
The Real Madrid Foundation has been running two socio-sporting projects in the Dominican Republic in conjunction with the Fundación Salesiana-Don Bosco for over a decade and with the Mapfre Foundation since 2013. These socio-sporting schools cater for the needs of 400 socially disadvantaged minors who are at risk from social exclusion. As well as receiving educational football and basketball tuition, the participants receive holistic training and support in a range of areas.
Socio-sporting school in Hainamosa & Hogar Escuela Domingo Savio
The school represents the only centre in the area that offers facilities in which to practise sport and has established itself as a space that brings young people together. As for the Hogar Escuela Domingo Savio, the centre has become a leading sports centre for children, adolescents, young people and adults in the local area and is also the only space for recreational sports activities available to the local population. In addition to sports activities, the schools also offer workshops in academic support and training and medical checks-up that assess the development and progress of the programme participants, as well as providing nutritional supplements.
