The executive vice-president of the Real Madrid Foundation, Enrique Sánchez, and assistant director general, Iker Casillas, welcomed the president of the NGO Cruzada por los Niños, María Díaz de la Cebosa, to Real Madrid City to renew the collaboration agreement concerning the social sports school in the rural village communities of the Gorongosa National Park Mozambique. The project began in 2018 and benefits almost 1,000 vulnerable young people.

Casillas explained: “This initiative is a fine example of how sport can contribute to improving people's lives and cooperate in developing communities”. Díaz de la Cebosa added: “We're proud to be able to continue with this program and to grow in such adverse conditions worldwide. We're running a unique project focused on key elements of human beings, like education, health, gender equality, caring for the environment and the psychological and motor-skills development, all using football as a tool. We will continue to expand our work in order to improve children's lives”.

Support program
This social sports school is a program which aims to support young people in education, good health and the matters of life in rural towns. There are high levels of illiteracy in the area, particularly among women and girls, where 71% are unable to read or write. This has a direct impact on their development, meaning they are forced to depend on men from a very young age.

In this context, the program has activities geared towards educating girls and empowering young women, using sport as a tool through which to do so. This helps facilitate societal growth in the communities located in the areas around the Gorongosa National Park.
