Abbott and Real Madrid Foundation today hosted a pop-up soccer and health clinic at University of the Pacific, for kids, ages 8-14, from across the Stockton community who might not otherwise get these kinds of opportunities. The clinic was hosted as part of Abbott’s ongoing partnership with Real Madrid and Real Madrid Foundation, which aims to educate, support, nourish, and develop kids around the world across all geographies, cultures and backgrounds. The event kicks off Real Madrid Football Club’s Soccer Champions Tour in the United States.

The event builds on Abbott’s commitment to the city of Stockton following the 2019 launch of the Future Well Communities program. This initiative brings together community groups and leading institutions including University of the Pacific, El Concilio, the Emergency Food Bank and others to address health disparities by removing the barriers that prevent people with diabetes from living healthy.

“Abbott and Real Madrid Foundation share a goal to nourish children around the world so they can have better health to achieve their potential,” said Ann Smith, senior director, external engagement and advocacy for Abbott's nutrition business. “Good nutrition, activity and healthy choices are the foundation for good health. Through this unique experience, we want kids to understand the choices they make today will impact their health in the future.”

The clinic included a soccer skills tutorial with Real Madrid Foundation coaches, a nutrition and hydration workshop for kids, and health and nutrition education and diabetes screenings for participants' families.

Through a video message, Roberto Carlos, Real Madrid and Real Madrid Foundation Ambassador, addressed the participants in the clinic and highlighted the importance of practicing sports and learning nutrition lessons, saying “Remember to use the nutrition lessons you learned today to stay healthy and strong in the future.”

“Stockton is a city with great health disparity,” said Mayor Kevin Lincoln. “Our communities lack access to healthy foods and nutritional literacy. Abbott and the Real Madrid Foundation are reaching these families throughout our city to meet the fundamental needs of health and wellness, while providing a fun, educational experience for our kids.”
