Chus Mateo: “That haste punished us”
“We started the game well, but we then slipped up a lot in defence”, said the coach after the match against Baskonia.
Real Madrid coach Chus Mateo discussed the match against Baskonia at the WiZink Center, in round 23 of the league season: 'We weren't smart enough. We were a little bit anxious, we wanted to take the lead straight away and at times we played with a lack of intelligence. That haste punished us'.
'We started the game well, on the right track, but we then slipped up a lot in defence during the second quarter and at the beginning of the third quarter. We have to read the game much better against Baskonia, who are a strong. We didn't do that'.

'When you lose the ball 17 times against a team that punishes you for every mistake, it's not easy; that's something we have to improve o. We've improved our three-point shooting defence, but we've lost our way inside. We have to find the balance we haven't had with them so far'.
'We have to be mentally tough and understand that this happens sometimes. It happened to us at a certain moment last year and we were able to turn it around. We have to stay consistent, continue to work hard and stay together. We have to be ready for when the finals are on the line and not make the same mistakes'.
