On 14 March 1989, Real Madrid's basketball team lifted their second FIBA Saporta Cup. The Peace and Friendship Stadium in Athens was the setting for one of the greatest finals in the history of European basketball, with our team coming out on top (117-113) against Snaidero Caserta in overtime. Above all though, the final will forever be remembered for Petrovic's exhibition that saw him post 62 points against the Italian outfit.
On their way to the final, Real Madrid beat Rangers BC in the Round of 16. In the quarter-final mini league they finished top of Group B with 5 wins in 6 games, ahead of their ultimate final rivals Snaidero Caserta, Hapoel Galil Elyon and Cholet. In the semi-finals, our team clinched victory over KK Cibona to book a place in the Athens show piece event, which gave way to an epic battle between Petrovic (62 points) and Óscar Schmidt (44).
