46th anniversary of our second Intercontinental Cup
Real Madrid were crowned champions for the second year in a row on 7 October 1977.
Today marks the 46th anniversary of the second Intercontinental Basketball Cup won by Real Madrid. It was on 7 October 1977 that our team was mathematically proclaimed champions by beating Varese in the fourth game of a group system played in the Spanish capital. This revalidated the title, the second of the three consecutive titles won between 1976 and 1978.
Real Madrid returned to the Intercontinental Cup a year after winning the previous edition in Buenos Aires. Led again by Lolo Sainz, the madridistas finished the competition undefeated, beating Francana of Brazil 94-113; Maccabi Elite 105-97; Dragones de Tijuana 105-129; Mobilgirgi Varese, in what would be the decisive game 115-94; and Providence Friars 103-90.
