Real Madrid won their second European Basketball Cup Winners' Cup on 14 March 1989. The setting for one of the best finals in the history of European basketball was the Peace and Friendship Pavilion in Athens, where our team prevailed 117-113 against Snaidero Caserta in overtime. This final will be remembered above all for Petrovic's display, scoring 62 points against the Italian team.
Real Madrid beat Rangers BC in the round of 16 on the road to the final. In the quarter-finals, they topped Group B winning 5 out of 6 games, finishing ahead of Snaidero Caserta, the side they met in the title match, Hapoel Galil Elyon and Cholet. Our team defeated KK Cibona in the semi-finals, to seal their place in the final in Athens, which will be remembered for the incredible duel between Petrovic 62 points and Óscar Schmidt 44.
