The most prestigious basketball in Europe gets underway with an exciting match to bring in the 2022-23 campaign. Real Madrid take on Panathinaikos at the OAKA Arena in Athens in a match involving team with a combined 16 European Cups under their belts. Real Madrid is the most successful team in the competition thanks to the 10 titles they have won, versus the Greeks' six. Today is the first stop in the Regular League in search of the Eleventh.

The two teams have met 33 times in the Euroleague since 2000, with our team coming out on top 22-11. In the last 14 games against the Greek side, we have won 13 of the games. A side with a rivalry over the years which has brought us some thrilling games and unforgettable moments such as Rudy's winning three-pointer or the 2018 and 2019 playoffs in which Madrid progressed. The last Madrid victory at the OAKA was on 15 December 2020 by 93-97.
Real Madrid's Euroleague opener sees them come into the game with a winning streak. Four from four and the Super Cup title. Chus Mateo's side are making up for the absences at the start of the campaign by drawing on the depth of their squad, thanks to the arrival of top-level reinforcements such as Musa, Hezonja, Cornelie and the return of Sergio Rodríguez. Tavares, the best centre and defender from last year's tournament, continues to lead the group. Sergio Llull is another name to watch as our captain looks set to become the player to have played the most Euroleague game, overtaking Felipe Reyes 345.

A rejuvenated Panathinaikos side
They come up against a side that has undergone a radical transformation. Dejan Radonjic is the new coach and has brought in nine new faces, including Paris Lee, Wolters, Grigonis, Derrick Williams, Ponitka and Gudaitis. The centre Papagiannis is one of the few players to remain with Papapetrou being the most notable absence. All set for a big game aganist OAKA.
