This evening, Real Madrid begin their 2022/23 Liga Endesa campaign with one trophy already in the cabinet, after the side secured the Super Cup on Sunday with a victory against Barcelona in the Seville final 89-83. Today, the Whites are away at Bàsquet Girona on matchday one of the competition. The reigning champions, coached by Chus Mateo will take on Marc Gasol’s newly promoted side.

The madridistas have hardly had time to celebrate their ninth Super Cup and must now fully focus on the league opener. The Whites have made a winning start in the last six seasons and they will be vying to continue that run on their visit to the Pabellón Municipal Girona-Fontajau, an arena Madrid will be familiar with, as they recorded a victory against the old Akasvayu Girona side 83-99 in the 2007/08 season.
This will be the first time Bàsquet Girona and Real Madrid have ever met in the ACB. The Catalans, who are coached by Aíto García Reneses and have Marc Gasol in their ranks president-player, clinched promotion to the topflight last season. They have also recruited experienced players in Quino Colom, Garino and former Maccabi man Taylor, and boast an abundance of young talent in the form of Miletic, Franch, Fjellerup and Vila.

Good performances
The Girona-based outfit play at high intensity and will push Madrid to the limit physically. But Chus Mateo’s players have shown these days that they can adapt quickly and have vast depth in their squad, despite the fact that Hanga and Rudy will be absent. The youth team product Hugo González is also in the squad. One man who will also be present is the MVP from the Super Cup, Walter Tavares, after the center’s stunning performance in the final against Barça, where he recorded a PIR of 40. Musa has also got off to a strong start with an average of 20 points for the team’s first trophy of the season.
