Karim Benzema was named Man of the Match for the match between Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Frenchman struck Real Madrid's 1,000th goal in the European Cup and bagged a brace as our team beat the Ukrainian outfit in the fourth matchday of the Champions League group stage.
After the clash, Benzema said: "I’m really proud to score the thousandth goal for this club, which I consider to be the best club in the world. I’ll always be very happy here. It was a tricky game for us against a good team like Shakhtar. We knew that the opposition was very good. In the end we had a hard time and we managed to win. Sometimes you win matches like that. We didn't play at our best like in the first game, but in the end we won. I had a knock and was a bit fatigued, but that's okay. I’ll recover for Saturday's match”.
“We're playing every three days at the moment and that's a bit tough, because we play a lot of high-level matches. What happened here tonight is something we've seen in the past, where we didn't perform well but ultimately won the game. The most important thing is that we got the three points. You can't always play well. It's perfectly normal that the fans always want us to play well, attack and score goals. We always try to do that, but today's opponents were really strong. We’ve ultimately got the two goals and won the game. I enjoy myself every time I take to the pitch and, as always, like to help the team to win the games”.
