Tribute to Santiago Bernabéu in Almansa
Eduardo Fernández de Blas, vice president of Real Madrid, attended the inauguration of a commemorative plaque at the place where the club's president for 35 years was born.
Almansa, the birthplace of Santiago Bernabéu, hosted a day of tribute to the man who served as Real Madrid's president from 1943 to 1978, leading one of the brightest eras in the history of our club. Eduardo Fernández de Blas, vice president of Real Madrid, attended the event, which was also graced by former player José Antonio Salguero.
During the event, a commemorative plaque was unveiled for the 130th anniversary of Santiago Bernabéu's birth on the façade of the house where he lived. The plaque reads: “Here was born and lived Mr. Santiago Bernabéu de Yeste.”
A key figure in the history of Real Madrid
Santiago Bernabéu was born in Almansa on June 8, 1895, and was appointed president of Real Madrid in 1943. Under his leadership, the club won 6 European Cups, 16 La Liga titles, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 6 Copa del Rey titles, 2 Latin Cups, and 2 Small World Cups in football. During his presidency, the basketball section also achieved 6 European Cups, 3 Intercontinental Cups, 19 League titles, 18 Copa del Rey titles, and 1 Latin Cup.
His tenure was marked by significant growth in both the institutional and sporting spheres of the club. Among his initiatives was the construction of the Nuevo Chamartín, inaugurated in 1947 and later renamed in his honor.
