66 years since the first Intercontinental Cup

On September 4, 1960, Real Madrid inaugurated the honors list of the Intercontinental Cup against Peñarol of Montevideo. Our team triumphed in that first edition against the Copa Libertadores winner in a two-legged tie. The first leg was held in Uruguay and ended 0-0.

The second leg took place at the Bernabéu, where Real Madrid achieved a resounding victory in front of their fans (5-1). The team led by Miguel Muñoz took control of the match right from the start, scoring three goals in the first ten minutes. Puskas scored twice, and Di Stéfano, redirecting a shot from the Hungarian, added another. The score was completed by Herrera and Gento.

9-time world champion
Sixty-six years later, Real Madrid remains the team with the most world champion titles. In total, it has nine, with the first three and the most recent achieved under the Intercontinental Cup format.
