Herrera joined Real Madrid from Oviedo at the age of 20, where he had been involved in their promotion to the First Division in 1957/58. The following year, he was in the Real Madrid squad that won the fourth European Cup before playing a key role the next season as his three goals in five games guided the team to La Quinta.
He was also instrumental the first Intercontinental Cup triumph, scorer in the 5-1 final victory over Peñarol. He was also a Spain international. He died of cancer in October 1962 at the age of 24.
