Follow here the transformation of the Madridista stadium.
The Santiago Bernabéu in the 21st century will be a great avant-garde and universal icon, and since June 2019, it has been undergoing a spectacular transformation. The retractable roof, which extends over the playing field, is already installed at a height of 55 meters above the ground. The fourth amphitheater on the east side with 2,800 seats has also been inaugurated.
With the start of the 2023/24 season, the new 360º fascia in the first amphitheater ring began to be used, providing new audiovisual content. Additionally, part of the 360º video scoreboard has already been installed.
Great Greenhouse The large underground greenhouse that will preserve the turf in optimal conditions is also prepared to store and maintain it on trays from the beginning of the 2023/24 season.
Before these advancements, the first significant actions on the stadium roof included lifting the voussoirs and subsequently closing the north and south trusses, between Castellana and Padre Damián. Work was also carried out on this part of the Bernabéu with the lifting of the extensions of the rolling trusses and the placement of the bottom and tubular trusses in the north and south ends.
Another spectacular moment was the lifting of the longitudinal mega-trusses and the movement of the roof structure on the east side, crossing the stadium from Castellana to Padre Damián. The central section of the crown beam was crucial for the new Castellana facade. Ten pyramids, each weighing 78 tons, make up its trunk.
New Towers An element that can also be appreciated is the new towers on Paseo de la Castellana. Equipped with ramps, escalators, and elevators, they replace the previous B and C towers and serve to make the transit of spectators more fluid. Additionally, they have an architectural function, as they are a structural support for the new roof. The other two supports for the roof are on Calle Padre Damián. To achieve this, the towers on this side were demolished, and foundation work began, which was completed with a metal structure.
There have been significant changes on this side since June 2019. One of them is the construction of the underground parking lot in the space formerly occupied by the La Esquina del Bernabéu shopping center. Approximately 500 parking spaces will be generated, allowing for new uses such as parking for Real Madrid and opposing team buses. A new pedestrian square will be located above this parking lot.
Another change was the demolition of the annex building, which housed the club's institutional offices and the Adidas store. This work allows for the construction of a new building that will rise along the entire side and will have ten functional levels above ground (compared to the previous three) and three underground levels. It will be a building integrated into the new volume of the stadium.
These actions have been carried out with precision and under the highest safety conditions, thanks to the installation of construction auxiliary means in the Bernabéu surroundings. Among them, six fixed cranes with a reach of 90 meters stand out. The construction camp has also been expanded by setting up new dining and locker room cabins for workers to rigorously comply with COVID-19 prevention measures.
All these innovations aim to transform the Santiago Bernabéu into an avant-garde stadium, offering maximum comfort, safety, and state-of-the-art technology, where fans continue to live unforgettable experiences.
