Real Madrid Foundation, HP and NGO Harapan Project Empower Indonesian Youth through Sport and Digital Education
A partnership for change: building confidence and future-ready skills through sport and technology. The project for children in vulnerable situations is being developed by the NGO Harapan Project, which since 2010 has been helping the local population of the island of Sumbawa (Indonesia).
The Real Madrid Foundation and HP are supporting the NGO Harapan Project to improve education, health, and now digital and AI skills for young people on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa.
Through the creation of Real Madrid Foundation-Harapan Project social sports schools, the project aims to improve opportunities for children in the Hu’u district - an area where many benefit from additional support to continue their education and maintain good health, with efforts strengthened through collaboration with local communities and authorities. These schools provide safe spaces for 360 children from nine villages, promoting healthy habits, gender equality, and values like respect and teamwork through football, while also offering food support to participants and their families.
Thanks to the partnership launched last season with HP, the social sports schools have now integrated a digital skilling program to equip the students with access to latest HP technology and digital skills learning content. Designed as a mentor-guided learning program, participants gain digital literacy skills ranging from basic computing to practical AI applications, all with an emphasis on responsible AI use.
The program also includes a collaboration with Girl Rising, HP’s long-time partner since 2010. Together, HP and Girl Rising are working with global partners to close the gender gap in Future of Work and AI skills, and empowering girls through creative educational resources and participatory spaces that inspire them to continue their education and pursue broader career opportunities.
Following a recent visit to see first-hand the positive impact of the collaboration and work in Sumbawa, Juliana Cen, President Director of HP Indonesia, said: “Technology becomes truly powerful when it empowers people. By bringing digital skills training and inclusive learning opportunities to young people in Sumbawa, we’re equipping the next generation with the confidence and capabilities they need to thrive in the future of work.”
Richa Hingorani, Global Program Director at Girl Rising, added: “We’re proud to create a personalized educational resource for adolescent girls living in the Hu’u district, encouraging them to dream big, value their own aspirations, and feel more confident in their abilities.”
Carlos Ferrándiz, President and Founder of the NGO Harapan Project, said: “Thanks to the partnership with the Real Madrid Foundation and now supported by HP, our children are not only receiving sports education and proper nutrition, but also quality education on crucial topics such as drug prevention, mental health, first aid, sexual education, and women’s empowerment, among other subjects essential to their development and future, such as digital skills.”
