Petr Cornelie (26/07/1995; Calais, France) has signed for Real Madrid ahead of the new season. The 27-year-old 6′11″power forward excels at rebounding, is a good three-point shooter and is versatile. The French international arrives from the Grand Rapids Gold in the G-League (the NBA's associate league for player development), where he averaged 17.8 points last term and was the competition's leader in rebounds with 12.8 per game.
In the season before that, with the Denver Nuggets affiliate team, Cornelie made 2.2 three-pointers per game with a 36.7% shooting percentage. The new Real Madrid player came through the youth ranks at Le Mans, where he debuted as a professional and was named the league's Best Young Player in 2014-15.
Olympic runner-up
He then went on to play for Levallois Metropolitans, before rejoining Le Mans, prior to making the move to Pau Orthez in 2019. In 2020-21, he scored 14.4 points (44.2% from three-point range) and 7.9 rebounds per game for the French club. These statistics earned him the opportunity to make the switch to the NBA with the Denver Nuggets, the franchise that had picked him in the 2016 draft. During his time there, he alternated between the NBA and the G-League, where he has excelled as one of the best players. A regular player with the French national youth team, Cornelie won the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with the senior national team.
