A first-half goal by Asllani sealed third place for the team on the final matchday of the season.

Real Madrid produced a hard-fought victory on the final matchday of the Primera Iberdrola. Alberto Toril‘s side beat Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stéfano and following Atlético’s defeat in Barcelona the Whites finish the season in third position. This means that the madridistas will once again play in the qualifying round of the Women’s Champions League next campaign. A goal by Asllani on the stroke of halftime handed the hosts a crucial three points.

With so much at stake for the madridistas, it was vital for the hosts to play at a high intensity and Maite showed her side’s intentions with an effort from the edge of the area that missed the target in the second minute. Just before the 20-minute mark, Villarreal went close with a headed effort that went wide and then Athenea replied but her strike also failed to trouble to goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, Real Madrid came close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions. First, Zornoza saw her shot blocked on the line by a defender and then Maite latched onto a rebound but was unable to keep the ball down. Then moments before the break the Whites’ persistence paid off when Esther was fouled by the keeper and Asllani converted the spot-kick to make it 1-0.

Madrid fight to see the game out
After the restart, Villarreal went in search of an equaliser and almost drew level in the opening minutes when Misa pulled off a fine save from a one-on-one situation. On the hour mark, Belén had the visitors’ best chance, but her shot once again went over the crossbar. Ten minutes from the end, Misa stretched sensationally to prevent an equalising goal. Real Madrid remained compact for the rest of the game to clinch the three points and, after Atletico Madrid’s defeat away at Barcelona, secured their place in next season’s Women’s Champions League.
