Real Madrid claimed their seventh Endesa League victory after a convincing win over Bitci Baskonia (65-83) in round eight. It was a very solid performance on the rebound, which enabled the side to take the lead from the second quarter forward. Pablo Laso's team brought a demanding week to a conclusion with a win at the Buesa Arena, with Poirier, Hanga and Tavares (17 points each) shining.
Both teams were noticeably tired in the early stages of a low scoring game. It was Baskonia who seized the initiative at the outset thanks to their strength around the hoop (6 rebounds), but Madrid gradually grew in to the game thanks to Hanga and Heurtel (8 points between the two of them). Laso's men began to settle more comfortably on the court as Tavares and Yabusele's contributions made it 10-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Scintillating second quarter
Real Madrid stepped up the intensity in the second quarter and stretched the lead to +11. Ivanovic's team refused to give up, and with 5 points from Enoch, they closed the gap on Real Madrid. The visitors stepped up a gear with Vukcevic, who was unbeatable from the three-pointers, making two in a row, and Poirier's brilliant work on the rebound to build their biggest lead so far (+14). It was Rudy who put the icing on the cake with a three-pointer that took the team into the break with a 26-39 lead.
The team came out after the break extremely focused and withstood the outside shooting of Fontecchio and Giedraitis. Tavares stepped up and made his presence felt, outstanding on the offensive rebound and putting eight points on the board. Hanga (two three-pointers in a row), Heurtel and Poirier joined him to take the lead to +25 at the end of the third quarter (38-63). Real Madrid's hard work took its toll at the beginning of the final quarter, yet despite the fatigue, Laso's men stood up to the Baskonia offence with Vukcevic, Poirier (10 rebounds) and Rudy. Contributions from Núñez and Llull at the end of the game ensured a brilliant win for Real Madrid in the Endesa League after three away games in a week of three games.
