"We face an Inter side that has the same system as last year but a new coach and new motivations", commented the coach.
Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media in the build-up to Real Madrid’s opening game of this season's Champions League campaign, in which the side will do battle with Inter Milan at the San Siro (Wednesday, 9pm CET). The boss previewed the contest in the following terms: “The team is in good shape. I think that we performed well against Celta. Tomorrow's game is a different story, it's a different competition and one that excites the Real Madrid fans as a whole. We want to do our best. Inter have the same system as last year, but have a new coach and new motivations. We want to win the game, dominate and play well and we'll be going all out to do just that. This is a very special competition for this club".

“The Champions League is special for me. I won it twice as a player and have very good memories of it as a player and a coach, in particular the Décima, which is the last time I won the Champions League as a coach. I've got very vivid and special memories of this competition”.

Differences between this Inter side and last year's
"They've got new players up top with a new system and new ideas. They've got some big players. They're a good footballing side, are in good form and it'll be a really open game. We'll have to be really competitive".

Vinicius Jr's performance levels
“I try to treat Vini Jr. in exactly the same way as I do the rest of the players. I push him in the training sessions and tell him to focus on his work. But then you've always got the quality of the player and when they're playing at that moment in time it gives them more confidence. He's confident and excited and the tougher times that he's come through gave him a lot of motivation. I think that everyone can see that the thing with Vini Jr. now is that he's got a cooler head in front of goal. In every other sense he's just like in previous season and is really quick in one-on-one situations. His finishing has been very good in recent games and he now just has to keep that up".

“It's dificult to say if a particular team are the favourites before a competition gets underway. What I will say is that Real Madrid will always compete in the Champions League. This club has won the competition more times than anyone else and we intend to go all out. We'll be up against some other really strong teams and it's really tough to say who's the favourite at this moment in time. We'll be going all out”.

Vinicius Jr. is confident, excited and his finishing has been really good in recent games.

Marcelo trained really well yesterday and was named in the squad list. At the end of the training session, he felt a little bit of discomfort. It was nothing major, but it has meant that he hasn't travelled and isn't available for the game. We brought him off on Sunday to make sure that he was ready for this game because Marcelo’s experience is very important to us. He's had this issue and let's hope that he's back soon. Bale had a problem in training session at the Bernabéu and I think he'll be out for a few days”.

LaLiga or the Champions League
“I don't know. It's a great source of motivation for me, but my biggest excitement has been returning to Real Madrid. What makes me happiest is to be able to go and coach every day at Valdebebas".

Alaba and Modrić
Alaba trained with the team yesterday day and I think that he's fine and ready to play. We had considered giving Modrić a rest and we'll see what we do with him”.
Defending better
“We’re capable of defending better and are working on that. The team loses its balance when out of possession and we have to be efficient. Being well positioned when in possession and allows the team to be well balanced when we lose the ball”.

Tension surrounding Champions League
“The atmosphere is different, but the Champions League is the Champions League and it's special for Real Madrid. It's not by chance that this club has won it on 13 occasions. I feel just as motivated as I do ahead of every game and my motivation is the same as it was during my first spell at the club”.

Allegiance for Inter
“Yes, I was an Inter fan as a child. They've always been a team that I've liked. I later became an AC Milan fan and and there was always a lot of respect in the derby games”.
