NEWS | 03/05/2021More than 400 children learn football, basketball and values thanks to Salesian Missions and the support of the Mapfre Foundation.
The students at the Real Madrid Foundation's social sports schools in the Dominican Republic, developed thanks to the alliance with Salesian Missions and supported by the Mapfre Foundation, return to football and basketball activities, in accordance with the recommendations of the local authorities regarding sports practice. The online tutoring classes and support for families are also continuing under the social action of the social sports programme.
Since 2011, the schools in the Dominican Republic have been carried out in two educational centres: Plaza Educativa Don Bosco and the Hogar Escuela Santo Domingo Savio belonging to the Salesian Society of the San Juan Bosco Antilles. The goal is to provide integral education for 430 children and adolescents, their social advancement and the reduction of child labour and juvenile crime. This is achieved through sports, school reinforcement and psychological and legal counselling. Sport is what attracts the children and their families to take part in a reintegration process at school, social valuation and family integration, while they also receive training in values and improve their living conditions.
Impact during the pandemic
The schools' sports and social team played a fundamental role in the COVID19 pandemic. Families in a highly vulnerable socio-economic situation were identified and basic food baskets were handed out to them after a fundraising campaign carried out by the Salesians in the country. There was also close contact with those involved through psychological support, and physical activities and traditional games were sent to the beneficiaries online. A group of volunteers provided altruistic support to ensure that no family was left without support throughout this crisis.
